Chapter Seventeen

Midterms

Stephan really does not want to go to class on Monday afternoon. He slides in the door at the last possible minute with the final stragglers, and takes a seat in the front row next to Will and Lauren, cringing at almost being late. He'd spent all of Sunday at home rather than at his table in the library, in case Jeff showed up. He hadn't left his apartment except to do laundry in the next-door building, even though he'd meant to go to the grocery store too. But there's only one store close to the campus, and well. He's hiding from Jeff, basically.

He can't fucking believe he kissed Jeff. It was like he was in a trance or something, all logical thought and reasoning totally suspended. It was unplanned, impulsive, and frankly a little weird. Not like he's always planning things out, but...

well. It was a mistake. One he'd wanted to make for about two months, but a mistake all the same.

Jeff knows that. Probably knew all about Stephan's gay little crush; he certainly knows now. God, he can't believe he's so fucking stupid sometimes....

At the end of the lecture, when Stephan is hoping for a quick getaway, Jeff asks the TAs to hang back for a few minutes. The kids clear out and he can't run; this is his job.

He joins the other three at the table at the front of the classroom.

"I just wanted to check in and see that you guys were doing okay, if you'd run into any problems?" They all respond in the negative, and Jeff nods, pleased by their answer. "Will the papers be ready to return by Wednesday?" They will, and Jeff makes a note in his planner, saying that he's going to go over some of the common problems of writing about history in the next session, now that the students have all had a little taste of the process. A mini-historiography lecture, he says, winking at Stephan. He drags up a pretty feeble smile in return, and Jeff's expression changes into something concerned. "All right then, see you guys on Wednesday," he says. "Don't forget to call or e-mail if you have any questions at all, okay?"

Will and Lauren take off, and Stephan tries to slink away with them, but is stopped when Jeff grabs him by the arm.

"Hang on, Stephan, I want to talk to you for a minute."

He turns around, trying not to cringe, unable to meet Jeff's eyes. Is he going to get fired? Told to find another TA job?

Reported for violating the student conduct rules? Shit. He starts to hyperventilate.

"Stephan." A quick glance shows that Jeff looks concerned, not angry. "Hey, look," he says, squeezing Stephan's shoulder. "It's fine. Really. You don't have to feel weird about this, okay?"

He doesn't? Why not? Huh.

He nods.

"Feel like getting a beer?"

Stephan shrugs. This is not what he expected, Jeff being all... normal. Not that he'd expected anything, but he thought 178
